Stock-rose wrinkled (Alcea rugosa) - a variety of herbaceous perennial plants used for decorative purposes. They have gained significant popularity among gardeners due to their long flowering and unpretentious care. Stock roses have found application in landscape design, they are actively used to decorate plots. The technology of growing in the open field practically does not differ from other flowering plants.

Description and characteristics

Stock-rose (mallow) is a tall plant with long erect stems. The bush reaches 160-180 cm. The shoots are dense and strong, covered with light green soft bark.

There is no foliage on the top of the plant. There are only basal plates, the diameter of which reaches 12 cm. The leaves are finger-shaped, dark green in color.

The bushes have tap roots. Thanks to this structure, underground shoots grow deep into the ground. This has a positive effect on the mallow's resistance to unfavorable weather conditions.

Stock-rose begins to bloom in the second year after planting in the ground

The budding period takes place at the beginning of June. Peduncles with small light green leaves are formed on the upper part of the stems. Mallows bloom in July. During this period, flowers with a diameter of 6-8 cm appear on the wrinkled stock-rose.They gather in panicles.

Important! Under favorable conditions, the flowering of wrinkled mallow continues until mid-September.

The stock rose is considered an undemanding crop. It grows well in almost all types of soil. Wrinkled mallows do not tolerate a lack of fluid well. Prolonged lack of watering shortens the flowering period, can lead to drying out.

Stock roses are characterized by medium frost resistance. Wrinkled mallow bushes hibernate in the ground, but shelter is required. A sharp drop in temperature to -10 degrees can greatly harm young bushes.

The plant is resistant to many types of diseases. Wrinkled stock roses are insensitive to powdery mildew, root rot, and most other infections. In summer, pests can grow on mallows.

Wrinkled rose varieties

Planting and caring for a wrinkled rose

To grow a bush in an open area, several rules must be followed. First of all, a competent planting of the plant is required. It can be complicated by the fact that mallows are grown from seeds.

Landing dates

Usually, the plant is immediately planted in open ground. Planting is carried out at the end of April or in May, when the soil warms up, and the air temperature will constantly be at least 8 degrees.

Important! Mallow seeds are planted on seedlings in early March.

When growing in this way, it must be borne in mind that the germination is very high. Almost all seeds germinate, but due to unfavorable conditions, the seedlings may wither prematurely.

Site and soil requirements

Mallows grow well on any type of soil. But in order for wrinkled stock roses to stay in the soil as long as possible, it is recommended to choose a place that meets several requirements.

Among them:

  • looseness and air permeability of the soil;
  • the presence of nutrient sources in the composition;
  • moderate humidity and acidity;
  • low groundwater table.

You can use standard flowering soil for planting. Mix compost, garden soil, sand and peat in equal proportions.

A well-lit area is required for growing. It must be protected from strong winds.

Planting and aftercare

The site needs to be cleared of weeds. It is advisable to dig up and loosen the soil. The seeds are pre-soaked in a weak fungicidal solution to prevent infection.

Planting stages:

  1. Make indentations in the prepared area.
  2. Place a small amount of humus or compost.
  3. Drizzle with a little water.
  4. Place the seeds without burying them in the soil.
  5. Sprinkle with loose soil with a layer of 2-3 cm.

Important! The distance between the seeds should be at least 10 cm, otherwise the bushes will grow close to each other.

Seeds are sown in furrows or individual pits

Wrinkled stock-roses are unpretentious, therefore they do not need specific care. It is enough to water the bush periodically so that it does not experience a lack of liquid. Weeds should be removed in a timely manner around wrinkled mallow.

In the summer, as the soil is compacted, loosening is required. To retain moisture, the soil is mulched with bark, peat or sawdust.

Tall varieties of stock rose require a garter. Otherwise, the shoots may break due to a strong gust of wind.

Wrinkled mallows do not need mineral supplements. It is enough to apply organic fertilizers 2-3 times a year.

Best suited:

  • compost;
  • droppings or manure diluted in water;
  • peat;
  • wood ash.

For the winter, the plant is cut off, leaving short (8-10 cm), superficial shoots. They are wrapped with breathable film or covered with dry foliage and spruce branches.

Pruning a wrinkled rose

Mallow is cut 2-3 times a year. The first time a wrinkled rose stem is cut in the spring, during the period of active growth of shoots. Excess stems and secondary root growth are removed.

In summer or early September, wilting flower stalks are cut. This is necessary to prepare the mallow for winter. In addition, wrinkled stock-roses are capable of self-seeding propagation.

Pruning of peduncles must be carried out before the formation of seed bolls.

In the fall, remove all surface shoots. Slices are recommended to be treated with an antiseptic solution to prevent rotting.

Reproduction of wrinkled rose

To get new specimens of mallow for planting in the garden, you can use one of the proposed methods. Wrinkled stock roses tolerate almost all breeding methods well.

Mallow cuttings

Young side shoots growing on the main stems are used as planting material. They are harvested in the spring, after which they are rooted in a nutritious substrate. Transplanting cuttings into open ground is recommended in the fall. Then they will better adapt to new conditions and will be able to endure the first winter without damage.

Seed propagation

The collection of planting material is carried out in September. The seeds are stored in a cool place with moderate humidity. In March, they are soaked in a growth stimulant and sown in a container with nutritious soil.

Seedlings appear after 2-3 weeks. They need to be watered regularly. The pick is carried out when the first true leaves appear.

Seedling growing technology:

Dividing the bush

This breeding method is prohibited for several reasons. Wrinkled mallows do not respond well to extraction from the soil and may die during transplantation. Stock roses have a pivotal structure of the root. It does not undergo division.

Diseases and pests

Wrinkled mallows rarely get sick. They are resistant to most infections.

Bushes can be damaged by:

  • rust;
  • cercosporosis;
  • ascochitis.

To prevent diseases, it is enough to carry out a number of preventive measures. They protect mallow from infection.

Main measures:

  1. Transplant the bush to a new location every 3 years.
  2. Antiseptic treatment of the soil around the plant.
  3. Spraying the bushes with a fungicide.
  4. Timely weed removal.

Damage to the sheets indicates an infestation or attack by insects

Among the pests of wrinkled mallow, spider mites and aphids are common. They are not able to provoke the death of the stock-rose, but they affect the decorative effect of the plant. When pests appear, the affected shoots are removed, and the remaining stems are sprayed with insecticides.

Rose wrinkled in landscape design

Mallows are grown in groups. The number of copies directly depends on the preferences of gardeners.

Important! Bushes must be planted in such a way that they do not shade each other.

In the photo, wrinkled roses can often be seen near fences and fences. Planting in such places is due to the fact that the plant is protected from the wind. At the same time, mallows perform a decorative function, greening vertical surfaces.

To create hedges, a wrinkled rose is planted in rows. The decorativeness of such plantings is manifested not only during the flowering period. Until this moment, roses are used to decorate the site with large leaves.

Healing properties of the stock-rose wrinkled

Mallow is used in traditional and folk medicine. Extracts of this plant are included in popular antitussive drugs. The components contained in the stock-rose, promote the separation of phlegm from the lungs and its excretion from the body.

Other beneficial properties that mallow have:
