Slate fence is the simplest enclosing structure that each of us remembers. It is today that there is such an assortment of fences on the market that you won’t even remember the whole thing, but before such a slate structure was found quite often, especially around the yards of those people who wanted to protect the ability to view their own territory and property. Well, or from the backyard, where you could always use used materials.

Today is an interesting topic that we missed a little earlier - slate fences and their installation in the country!

Is it expensive to install a slate fence

Some time ago, slate was considered a material without deficiency, which simply rotted in piles at many enterprises, and therefore it turned upside down, bought up for nothing, changed barter. It often happened that roofing, which at that time was mainly involving slate, completely supplied the yard with material for the construction of the fence. In general, other materials were more expensive, and in a small assortment, but slate was enough. One could say for sure that a slate fence is a cheap fence!

But today the situation on this issue is ambiguous. We have repeatedly calculated the cost of a wide variety of fences comparatively and came to the conclusion that slate fencing cannot now be considered the cheapest.

For example, a stacked fence made of wood will cost less, the netting and welded mesh can also set competition in budget types of fencing. Closer to the professional sheet, the slate is leveled, and even begins to seriously get cheaper, but if we talk about metal, decorative wood and stone, then the material really seems simple and inexpensive.

As you can see, this is not the most profitable option, but cheaper than many others!

Benefits of Slate Fencing

We will go by the method of listing certain facts, since in this way it is more convenient to talk about the advantages:

  • Slate is material from the middle price category, which means it is available to almost everyone. Therefore, the design of it will also be available, but it is worth remembering the price of the frame, installation posts and mounts, they are always included. It should also be noted that the wave option is slightly cheaper than the flat one. From which one you will build - choose!
  • Slate fence can be quite durable under conditions of moderate or dry climate, as well as with the exception of mechanical damage, which he does not like;
  • The material does not burn, so if you build a fence of metal and slate, you will have a completely fireproof fence at the cottage. True, at a certain temperature the material is cracking, and pretty good!
  • Slate is resistant to average temperature fluctuations, and does not respond to changes in the same way as, for example, the same corrugated board;
  • The material is easy to process. It can be swabbed, washed, brushed with a regular brush and a metal brush, if necessary, even painted. Speaking of paint, there are also color options, but because the “lineup” of slate fence is expanding;
  • The material has medium soundproofing properties. A high fence made of slate will not save you from the noise of the streets, but if it rains heavy rain or hail, there will be much less sound than a fence made of profiled sheet, sheet metal, stainless steel, sheet metal;
  • Such a fence can always be quickly repaired by replacing only one section. In addition, slate does not conduct current, is resistant to corrosion and many chemicals, opaque, is a good visual limiter.

Disadvantages of slate fence

  • The first and most obvious drawback is the content of the material. It contains life-threatening asbestos. But again, it is very dangerous when cutting material or while working in the warehouse where it is stored. If the slate is on the street and you do not breathe its “fumes” constantly, no problems should arise;
  • The fence of the slate site will be heavy due to the large weight of the material itself. This can create some inconvenience during installation and trouble in the future. By installation - more serious load-bearing structures will be required; for future troubles - tilting of the fences due to weight, changing the geometry of the once level fencing;
  • Poor moisture resistance. This option should not be used in regions with a humid climate. The fence will not last in the normal state for enough time, it will begin to darken, become covered with moss, crack;
  • The slate is quite fragile, and does not withstand serious point loads. Any blow is a crack or hole, which will lead to repair. Also, over time, when the fence begins to slope from the weight and displacements of the soil, cracks can go in places where the material rests on the base, in places of fastenings with a frame;
  • Low aesthetics. Honestly, a wave slate fence doesn't look very good. If you take color, the situation can be corrected quite well, but it will have to be repainted almost every year. With a fence made of flat slate, the situation is slightly better, it is more decorative.

There are still many advantages and disadvantages of slate fencing, but they are already evident in individual cases, depending on the installation, operating conditions, climate, installation location, process correctness.

Why you can not bend slate nails

DIY installation

Assembling a slate fence in a country house is a medium-sized occupation, which each of us can handle.

Therefore, we will not be discouraged and look for options easier, because we can do this!

Fencing installation marking

There are no differences in the layout, and this process is absolutely identical to the layout of any other type of fence. Just clear the installation area, pull the thread and set it so that it initially passes along the line of the future fence. You can fasten the thread to fittings, wooden posts, steel bar, pegs.

The main requirement is the exact size and perimeter of the thread.

You should also immediately place marks under the installation posts. It can be wooden posts, steel pipes, concrete poles. The markings on them should be especially accurate, because a mismatch of the distance of only a few centimeters will lead to complications. You will need to rearrange a lot of pillars, and this is difficult. Slate is a standard type of material, with ready-made dimensions, and it simply cannot be welded or expanded in any other way.

Pillar Installation

The pillars of your choice are installed in pits 50-80 cm deep, depending on the pillars themselves, as well as the slate sections. It is advisable to install them deeper, because then the possibility of displacement to the side will be much lower. Moreover, with a high height of the fence.

Further, the columns are concreted with the method that is convenient for you - they are poured with a liquid solution, covered with gravel with spilled concrete, installed with stops in the soil, stone or metal spacers. Also, be sure to take care of protecting the pillars, because moisture from the soil can damage them in the coming years. We have already talked about protection methods, and this can be painting in several layers with oil paint, winding with roofing felt, coating of fuels and lubricants, for example, oil working off, solid oil.

Installation of slate sections

Everything seems standard here - mounting the frame and installing the sections on the bolts. But we would like to highlight several types of installation, among which the traditional and the most correct.

So, the sections can be set as follows:

  • Stretch between the posts two lines of the horizontal base from a corner or a profile pipe, and simply screw the slate with bolts and nuts. This will give a certain strength, but damage may occur over time, since the mount works on a fracture of the material. To reduce the load and pressure of the mounts on the slate itself, it is necessary to use large diameter washers on both sides of the mount. Often used and rubber or silicone linings;
  • Install the fence on the same two metal cross-members between the posts, but also make a base that will hold the bulk of the fence and prevent bolts in the slate holes from breaking holes and cracks. It can be a concrete border or a concrete pole. Also, it is possible to replace ready-made concrete products with a thin strip foundation, stone, brick;
  • But you can do it only with metal, and even leave a small clearance under the fence, about 5-7 cm from the ground, due to which the slate will not come into contact with moist soil under any conditions, which means it will last longer. To do this, precisely at the center of two adjacent fence posts, at the right distance from the ground, a metal cross member is welded. This is the basis for the installation of the sheet, so the cross-member should be wider so that the wave slate can rest well against it. From above, at the height of the second fastening, two metal strips are installed that hold the sections together. Naturally, here it will be necessary to observe the depth of the wave. We must not forget to make bolted connections between them, of course, through slate. This installation method will save the fence from moisture below and mechanical damage from bolts from above, since the section will stand on a solid surface of a solid base between the posts;
  • But there is another way - the simplest and most standard. It is used if you are installing a fence of flat slate at the cottage. It is a rectangular slab that can be fixed on two crossbars between the posts. But you can always weld the plate with a corner around the perimeter, and then fix the section between the posts by welding. You will need to weld only the base to the posts.

Slate fence in the design of the cottage

It is difficult to say that a fence made of a flat or wave slate sheet looks beautiful and decorative in the country. Today there are solutions that look much more interesting in modern landscape design. But if you chose this option, then you can work with it.

There are a lot of design options:

  • There is a colored slate on the market that will already complement your yard's interior and exterior with paints;
  • The fence can always be washed and cleaned on time, due to which it will be constantly light gray, well, or of a different color, if you chose a material with a shade or painted it;
  • You can also not paint sections, but apply certain patterns to the plane. In practice, it is simple, and the fence is quite an interesting look;
  • On the fence, you can fix additional details, arrange it using a variety of decor;
  • Another option is a live fence. It is clear that this will be a little in the wrong format, but nothing prevents us from planting weaving plants along the fence or installing flower pots on poles and upper mounts, transforming the usual fence into green with the same.

Do-it-yourself slate fence is a good idea if you need to save money. We can’t say that this fence is too durable, but it can last up to ten years without any problems.
