Protecting the garden from hares - One of the important concerns in the cold season. It is necessary to properly prepare for a meeting with these small animals, otherwise they can seriously spoil young trees and shrubs.

In spring, summer and early autumn, when there are a lot of greenery in the fields and forest belts, few rabbits will run into your summer cottage. Yes, without a doubt, hares can sit in your garden or garden if they find there a lot of juicy food in the form of seedlings and older cultivated plants, but this is extremely rare.

The animals are fleeing to the villages and country cooperatives closer to winter, when it becomes more dangerous and hungry at their permanent habitat.

By and large, hares could live in the field, but they do not dig holes, like rabbits. They equip themselves with nests or cubes in the low parts of the relief, clogging under the dry grass. But in winter, they are much more comfortable in our gardens, where it is not so windy, you can hide behind hay or in a mountain of dry weeds, and also go to dine at any time for lunch. It is here that the most delicious and juicy winter food remains now - the bark of trees and the stems of younger plants.

Harm from hares in the garden

Making massive raids or coming to your kindergarten one by one, the hares immediately try to destroy the young growth, on which the bark is more juicy and not so stiff. Having destroyed the maximum of such growth in the garden, animals begin to destroy the bark on older trees. Since there is no favorite food for them now, they gradually peel the lower layers of the bark of deciduous trees, then higher and higher, until they reach a height of up to one meter. Yes, bunnies feed, standing on their hind legs and completely exposing the most important part of any tree.

It is doing serious harm !!! Initially, winter cold harshly affects the “bare” tree, which begins to dry out and crack. Freezing itself affects garden trees very badly, because during frosts an unprotected tree dies quite often, and one that has no bark on the stem, almost without exception.

Huge harm for the young kindergarten, because hares destroy all young branches and stems that would be ready in spring to give flowering and fruits, young foliage.

How to determine that hares have visited the territory

If we do not see a “long-eared pest” in the garden, this does not mean that it does not exist. Hares eat the bark of trees at night, very afraid of any rustling and movement. Due to poor vision, but very good hearing, which nature has replaced some of the shortcomings, the animal may not catch my eye, but at the same time continue to do trouble in the garden. Few of the summer residents can immediately understand with whom it is he who should fight, because without seeing the enemy, it is difficult to choose the method of his expulsion or destruction. But there are certain signs by which one can recognize rabbit activity in the garden:

  • The shoots of young plants are eaten to the very root, as if someone had removed them with secateurs;
  • The bark on young shrubs and trees, and partly on adult trees, is absent at a height of up to one meter (or simply eaten up if hares have visited recently);
  • The relief of a summer cottage is partially corrupted by fossa;
  • It is quite realistic that you will meet other traces of the guest in the garden, because the food you eat must go somewhere.

Each such sign is an alarm bell for a summer resident, and it is good if it sounds as soon as possible. After all, if you notice signs of the life of the "eared" only in a slightly spoiled bark, and not in a completely eaten garden, you can still save it!

Preventive measures, or how to scare away hares

Not every summer resident decides to go out with a gun on a small animal, although among us there are a lot of hunting lovers. But to open fire in your own yard is not an option at all, and therefore, we need to find more humane and civilized ways to control pests.

But it’s more correct to do right away not even destruction or protection, namely prevention. Many of the right measures will help keep the garden whole all winter, without sin in the soul.

If you are, so to speak, an urban summer resident, and the site you have is mainly for relaxation, then we are sure that you will not have many trees in the garden. Of course, there are frank gardeners among urban residents, but more often it happens that we just do not care what to grow in the garden. If you are from such a number, then try to plant in the garden those crops, shrubs and trees that the pest is “too tough”. That is, it is precisely those trees that can please you with delicious fruits in the warm season, but rabbits will not have to taste. It’s very simple to choose such ones - talk to professionals from your cooperative, old-timers of the entire summer cottage area, and they will surely give advice on the fact that local pests eat right away, and that they do not pay attention at all.

A very interesting way is to distract the hares from their landings. To do this, you can choose plants that the pest tastes, and along the perimeter of the cottage, or even a little further from the site, plant such plants. Rabbit raid is a transition to the first goal of satiation. If they like to eat in the clearing of “distracting plants”, then “eared” may not reach your garden!

A good prevention method is cleanliness on site. There should be a minimum of garbage, heaps with firewood (because they have a place in the woodcutter), weeds, extra shrubs. Thus, you will make the maximum review for yourself, but for the hare - the danger area, where he has nowhere to hide. On the plain, so to speak, in an open field, the animal feels very uncomfortable, and therefore even if there are a lot of goodies, the pest may not come.

If these methods do not help, then it is worth using not only prevention, but also direct protection. It is most correct to use these methods in combination, so that your garden does not feel the edge, or rather the transition, when pests, not taking preventive measures, begin to destroy plants.

How to protect the garden from hares

Today, there are many ways to limit the nutrition of bunnies on your site, and this means only one thing - they will not come to you for lunch. And it is true, because there will be nothing here, but pests are not used to attracting attention to themselves!

How to protect plants in the garden from eating rabbits? There is nothing complicated if there is a quality fence around the summer cottage. A fence built of stone, a fence made of bricks or a netting netting is a sufficient barrier for pests, but sectional fences, the simplest ones, can let animals into the garden. Therefore, it is necessary to purchase a fine-mesh metal mesh, for example, an inexpensive chain-link in coils, and wrap it around those sections of the fence where rabbit access is possible. It is clear that a few hundred square meters will take a little mesh, but with large sections it can be quite expensive. Therefore, we recommend that you pay attention to the following methods of protecting the garden from furry guests.

You can install an internal fencing from the net, but it should be done in the warm season. The orchard should be fenced with the same net, it is possible and not expensive, pulling it along the columns from a pipe, corner, thick reinforcement. At the same time, the height of such a fence should be at least one meter. It is also worth knowing that part of the net, about 25-30 cm, must be buried in the ground so that the hares do not undermine, and therefore the total width of the net should be 130 cm.

If such measures are not suitable for you, in household and garden stores you can buy a plastic mesh or the same metal mesh for each tree individually. You can use a skein of small chain-link, cutting off a piece for each tree.

Shrubs are also saved in the same way, around which small fences are installed. But here it should be taken into account that the supports of the fence must be strong, otherwise, under the weight of a hare who is hungry and climbs to the stem of the bush, the net may fall and open access to food.

There are stores and special plastic tubes to protect young trees, this year's seedlings. It often happens that there are still no branches on the main trunk, and then the tube is simply put on it. If not, then only to the lower part, but for this a plastic flexible tube is used, with a longitudinal slot along the entire length.

Other methods of dealing with hares in the country

Each summer resident chooses which method to use. This can be scaring away, physical protection from hares, chemical or more radical, using lethal means. Therefore, we do not have the right to limit you, especially since we do not know the exact situation for hares in your area.

So, you can start with the simplest additional methods, and these are motion sensors. Often, such installations are purchased ready-made or made independently. But the principle of work is the same. If a hare runs past such a sensor, an audible signal sounds instantly or a light comes on and the animal quickly rushes out of the garden.

Another simple method for a summer resident, but very serious for a pest is a snare, a trap or a trap. Some of these accessories for fighting can be fatal, while some just help to catch the animal in order to release it and scare it harder.

You can use chemicals that are produced in your own kitchen or bought on the market. Immediately this is not even chemistry, but the standard seasoning is black pepper. If it is scattered around the site, creating a certain border, the hare will not cross through it. But it is better, or rather, more economical, to make protection around each individual tree. Keep in mind that wet pepper does not work, which means that you will need to update it often.

There are also really chemical barriers to pest activity in the garden - repellents. They work worse than pepper, but by no means always, because a hare, like any other creature, can gradually adapt to various external influences.

It is also possible to protect trees from hare attacks by roofing material, coils of wire and even old stockings. But all these methods should be applied on time, until the hares have tasted the juicy bark.

It must be remembered that hares in the garden - Although shy, but very enterprising pests, and if you poorly defended the garden or were too lazy to finish the job qualitatively, the “eared” will definitely find a loophole under the net or jump a wet repeller in the snow to get to the food.
