Not so long ago, we asked an interesting question: but should we build a change house in the country? And now, thanks to our own experience and a few reasonable tips from specialists, the building was successfully completed. Today we decided to tell you how to build it with our own hands.
Change house in the country - the solution to many issues. Here you can settle down during the repair of the main buildings, organize a summer kitchen or a small warehouse, and if the building loses its household purpose, install winter rabbit houses inside, arrange a house, etc.
Therefore, we believe that such a simple and inexpensive building can be useful to everyone.
In view of the fact that we worked many times with wood and small summer cottages, today we decided not to go into polemics about choosing a place for a change house, not to talk about materials and tools, but to go straight to the construction stages, because this is the most important thing in our topic .
We build a change house in the country with our own hands
Frankly, a building can take only a few days if you work with a small team. But since we often work alone, well, or only with an assistant, it’s difficult to name the exact dates. Moreover, most of us visit the cottage only on weekends. In this case, the construction of a change house can take several weeks or even a month. But this is not the most important thing, but the correct conduct of the process as a whole and of each stage separately. Therefore, we focus on quality and think about the durability of the future building every time we pick up a hammer!
We already know how to draw up a plan of action, adjust the size to our own requirements, as well as choose construction materials, because we repeatedly engaged in similar matters during the repair of a country house or during the construction of a garage, parking, canopy and gazebo. Therefore, we simply pile up all our thoughts, take a sheet of paper and a pencil, write down all the requirements and determine the main purpose of the change house. Thus, through simple solutions, we derive the total area, height of the change house, production materials, roofing, insulation and so on.
We will not determine the direction of installation of the change house, as under a greenhouse, nor will we look for a more sunny or elevated place. We will leave this to you, because only the summer resident himself knows where it is more convenient for him to arrange such a structure. And we will start by preparing the site for the cabins that we want to build.
The site should be smooth and clean, without weeds and shrubs, and certainly without young overgrowth next to growing trees. It’s all worth removing and destroying, especially since there are plenty of ways to deal with various plants in our arsenal.
Having removed all unnecessary from the location of the change house, we level the site and cover it with dense plastic wrap. It is better not to take the greenhouse option, since there is not enough strength there, but more dense covering materials are well suited. The main thing is to choose the size of the film so that it covers the entire area of the future change house, and also “hugs” the area around, about a meter on each side. This layer is necessary for us to protect the foundation from moisture that will come from the soil. If this is not done, after a couple of years the foundation will begin to collapse, and after 3-4 years you will be able to notice the effect of moisture on the wooden base of the change house. Do not waste money on film, because it will almost double the life of the building.
On the film, we recommend pouring a layer of sand mixed with crushed stone. This will make it possible to strengthen the film, as well as level the surface under the base of the change house. Many create drainage layers under similar structures, sprinkling the base with gravel or gravel and filling holes in the film, but we do not think that this is the best option. And therefore, if you want to provide additional outflow of water from the film and the sandy base, make a slight bias around the cabins. It will be enough just a couple of centimeters per meter.
We decided not to spend money, and also not to overwork, because there is no sense in filling in the strip foundation or installing a light structure on a more capital basis. Moreover, as a result of the installation of the simplest foundation, we get some ventilation. This will help keep the base from rotting longer.
For opponents of this method, we have a great idea! If you think that the floor of the change house should be insulated, upon completion of the installation of the foundation, just close the perimeter of the change house, install the formwork and pour the solution over the entire area. A border of only 7-10 cm will be enough to produce high-quality insulation. After, pour expanded clay into the base of the floor and then proceed in the same way as in the case of building a bath. But do not forget that the floor must be not only warm, but also dry!
So, we install concrete blocks strictly according to the plan and cover them with a double layer of roofing material to create even better protection. Next, we take the beam to create the foundation, and with it, as well as with the participation of the water level, we level the concrete blocks on the site. All of them must be in a single horizontal plane so that the differences do not interfere with further work and do not affect the structural characteristics in the future.
The basis of a country change house
For the installation of the base, we recommend choosing a high-quality and dry wood - timber with parameters of 100x150 mm or at least 100-120 mm. This will make it possible to obtain a high-quality, reliable and, most importantly, strong and durable foundation with good bearing capacity.
The beams are laid on concrete blocks strictly in level, tied together with end brackets or even sheet metal, and also fixed on concrete blocks.
It also happens that cabins are moved around the territory of the summer cottage or even taken out of it. Then the foundation fixed to the foundation can interfere with the transportation of the structure. We recommend fixing the base to the foundation only at the corners, well, or around the perimeter with the obligatory designation of the fixing points so that you know exactly where the fasteners are.
Fastening the base of the change house to the foundation can be done using turnkey anchor bolts. This is pretty quick and easy if you have a punch and cloak at hand.
We begin the installation of the vertical frame of a summer house from the corners of the structure. To do this, we take a beam of 50x100 mm or 60x100 mm, and we install on temporary screeds. Next, be sure to align the racks, put them on a plane with vertical racks around the perimeter, and install metal fastening plates that specify the necessary stiffness of the fastening.
After checking the levels of the racks, we bind them with horizontal beams to get a single wooden structure of high strength.
It is worth remembering that in front of us there is also the construction of a change house roof, and therefore immediately we make one row of vertical racks a little higher. This row falls on the front part, along the rear wall the vertical racks will be shorter (lower). The difference between them should be about 50 cm.
We connect the racks with floor beams, and on top we make a strapping with a bar.
Roof of a change house
For the construction of the roof of the summer house, we have already set the foundation on which it is now necessary to mount the rafters. They must be strong and straight so that further crate for roofing material does not become a problem. Rafters are stacked with the same pitch of about 60 cm, always with a strong connection, on the floor beams. Remember that the wooden elements of the roof should be slightly longer to protrude beyond the perimeter of the change house. This will help create a visor on the front of the structure, as well as make a base for water drainage at the rear.
The rafters are fixed with a locking method using nails, self-tapping screws or bolts and nuts. You can also use special metal mounts in the form of plates.
Window and door marking
In order not to get a gloomy room without light and the possibility of airing upon completion of work, it is necessary to foresee the location of windows and doors in the cabin. To do this, additional racks are installed on the frame of the building, reinforcing the openings and providing easy installation of doors and windows. To do this is quite simple, if in terms of construction you have provided for the size and number of such openings. If not, then the work can be done locally, but only using a level and a plumb line, or a laser level.
You can install windows and doors in the structure immediately, but you can also postpone this process until later, and complete it after the completion of the main construction.
To lay the roofing material on the roof of the change house, we need to make a crate. Since everything was originally built according to our level, we can simply take a smooth and high-quality material, for example, the same board, and nail it strictly perpendicular to the rafters with the same step-clearance of 7-10 cm.
Here nails and a hammer or self-tapping screws and a screwdriver come to the rescue.
After installing the wooden crate, you need to cover the roof itself. We talked a lot about roofing materials, and therefore you can easily choose high-quality and beautiful material. We solved the problem with the help of roofing material and ondulin, since we considered this option practical, fast and average in cost.
We also went through the installation of floors earlier, and therefore we know for sure that you will have no problems with this. It remains only to decide how exactly the laying of the rough floor, insulation and wooden flooring of a decorative type will occur.
Previously, we had a proposal to work with the floor in the same way as in a country bath, but in addition there are other solutions. For example, if you provide for a threshold in advance on one of the base bars (the first base beam is 100x150 mm in size, and the next 100x100 mm), the subfloor can be laid on the threshold, where it can be fixed. But if this is not done, we simply lay the board on the base to which we fasten it.
It is very important to use special antiseptics for these parts of the change house, as well as materials that provide long-term service to wooden materials. Here you can study the topic of fire protection in more detail.
On top of a tightly laid board, we fill the waterproofing layer. It can be a plastic film or a better material for professional work. We decided not to spend too much money, and so we took the tape and installed it on the floor with a stapler and staples.
We put insulation into the finished insulated cells, for which we chose ordinary mineral wool in rolls. Cutting in size occurs on the spot, but it is very good if you provided for the step of the base along the width of the minvata roll, say, 60 cm.
The insulation material is sealed in the niches of the floor and is no longer fixed. On top, just install an additional layer of waterproofing and again fasten it to the brackets.
Now we just have to install the decorative floor itself. We do not need a base for it, and we will not use OSB-plates, as many masters do. Just a cover with a good and dry tree, which can be opened with varnish or painted.
When the final floor of the board is ready, go to the next step.
Sheathing of a change house outside
We tighten all the walls of the building with an insulating film, which will protect the interior from moisture and wind. Be sure to overlap the material at about 20 cm, and after attaching the brackets to the tree, we stretch all the joints with a wide tape to help ensure tightness.
When this stage is completed, we pass to a covering of a change house. This is the most interesting and almost final process, if, of course, you have already decided on the finishing material. It’s up to you to decide whether it’s wood or siding, composite panels or plastic imitation, the main thing is to make a high-quality and level finish, so that the appearance puts a bullet in the main building.
Sealing and insulation of the structure
Having received a new and nice building, inside you can find many drawbacks, the first of which will be a draft. We eliminate it and the future autumn and winter cold is very simple - we make sealing and warming.
Foam will help in working with joints and seams, timely cut and putty will protect the very foam and ennoble it before future painting. The mineral wool we used to warm the floor will also help with walls and ceilings. The technology here is quite simple - frame, material laying, waterproofing and lining with decorative materials. By the way, you can insulate the change house with polystyrene.
The same thing should be done with the ceiling so that the cold does not penetrate the thin roof.
Interior arrangement and decor
We got a new cabins in the country, which can be used for any purpose. But I would also like to add some amenities to the building so that it was really nice to be inside. This is electricity supply with all safety conditions, water and sewage, which is possible in similar buildings at any stage, ventilation and heating. But all this is already after the repair, which you will perform depending on the purpose of the building, because we still do not know if this will be a residential building or just a small and cozy warehouse.
